چکیده

A novel way to investigate perturbations of the electrostatic potential across a sample surface is presented, aiming at application in 2D contact phenomena. The idea is to deposit surface state electrons (SSE) on a thin layer of liquid helium covering the surface of a solid state sample. The density of the SSE adjusts to screen perturbations of the electrostatic potential across the sample. As a result, the helium layer thickness varies due to the variation of the electrostatic pressure, thus providing a map. This map may be read interferometrically by a technique already employed for the investigation of multi-electron dimples on helium. We realized this mapping for a structured metal electrode as a test sample to investigate the resolution of the method. PACS numbers: 68.10.Gw, 73,90.+f, 67.90.-hz

Evaluation of the Effects of Different Filters and Helium Bag on the Reduction of Electron Contamination in Photon Beam of Neptun Linac

Introduction:  Skin  sparing  is  one  of  the  most  desirable  characteristics  of  high  energy  photon  beams. However, the photons emerging from the target of linacs are contaminated by secondary  electrons  as  a  result  of  their  interactions  with  air,  collimators,  flattening  filter  and  any  other  objects in their path. This phenomenon tends to increase the skin dose received b...

Possible Correlation Effects of Surface State Electrons on a Solid Hydrogen Film

Surface state electrons (SSE) on cryogenic surfaces such as helium, hydrogen and neon have been receiving continuous attention over the past years 1. They have been used as surface probes 2,3, but there is also major interest in the properties of the 2-dimensional electron system itself. High electron densities can be reached on solid substrates which furthermore allow to study the effects of v...

Surface State Electrons on a Hydrogen Film. 2. Influence of Adsorbed Helium Films

We have investigated the conductivity of surface state electrons on liquid 4He films supported by a quench-condensed thin solid hydrogen substrate. A pronounced dip in the ac-conductivity was observed as the He film thickness reached about 10 layers. This phenomenon was studied at different temperatures (range between 1.6 and 210, electron densities from 0.9 to 19x10S cm -2, frequencies between...

Electron transport in a quasi-one dimensional channel on suspended helium films

Quasi-one dimensional electron systems have been created using a suspended helium film on a structured substrate. The electron mobility along the channel is calculated by taking into account the essential scattering processes of electrons by helium atoms in the vapor phase, ripplons, and surface defects of the film substrate. It is shown that the last scattering mechanism may dominate the elect...

Contact phenomena in 2D electron systems

A promising wity ro investipa~c ZD contact phenomena is proposed. This nlcthod is based on the idea of dcpositing surface sta.te electrons (SSE) on a thin layer or liquid helium covering the surface or a solid sample cntitaining ;I 1U-charge carrier sysiem. Thc density of SSE adjusts to screen contact-induced perturbations or the elcctrosratic potential across the silmple. As a result, the heli...
